How to Actually Weigh Tongue Weight Before You Tow
Tongue weight is the one number in this whole subject that you can measure yourself, and almost nobody does. Everyone calculates it from a percentage, and the percentage is a design convention rather than a description of the trailer sitting in your driveway.
The percentage tells you what a well-loaded trailer should have. Weighing tells you what yours does have. Those are different questions and only the second one keeps you legal.
Why the percentage is not enough
The industry teaches a proportion of loaded trailer weight that should sit on the ball. It is a real and useful design target and it is not a measurement of your trailer.
Three reasons it can be badly wrong for you.
Loading changes it enormously. Move a heavy item from behind the trailer's axles to in front of them and the tongue weight goes up, with the total trailer weight unchanged. A water tank filled or empty, a generator moved, a bike rack on the back: any of these shift it.
A percentage of an estimated total is an estimate of an estimate. If you do not know the trailer's actual loaded weight, applying a percentage to a brochure figure compounds two errors.
And your vehicle may publish a hard cap that the percentage would exceed. This site's own work has already found a published vehicle tongue cap that a conventional percentage of that vehicle's own maximum trailer rating would have gone past. When a manufacturer's stated cap and the general convention disagree, the manufacturer's cap governs, and you only discover the conflict if you have a real number to compare.
What tongue weight is and why it matters is the mechanism behind all of that.
What too little and too much each do
Too little tongue weight is the dangerous one, and it is the one people accidentally create by loading heavy items at the back to keep the truck level.
A trailer with insufficient weight ahead of its axles is unstable. It will sway, and once sway starts it feeds itself. No hitch, no sway bar and no driving technique reliably fixes a trailer that is loaded tail-heavy.
Too much tongue weight overloads the vehicle. It goes onto the rear axle and against payload, it lifts the front axle, and it can put you over the vehicle's rear gross axle weight rating even when everything else looks fine. Payload is the limit that binds first on most rigs, and tongue weight is the part of it people forget to count.
So there is a window, and the window is bounded above by your vehicle's numbers and below by stability. Both ends require knowing the actual figure.
Four ways to get a real number
In order of accuracy.
1. A public truck scale
The most accurate and the least convenient, and the one worth doing once.
The method is a subtraction. You weigh the combination in one configuration, then in another, and the difference is the tongue weight. Specifically: weigh with the trailer coupled, then uncouple and weigh the vehicle alone on the same scale in the same session, and the increase on the vehicle's axles when coupled is the tongue weight.
Public truck scales are at truck stops, and they are set up for exactly this. The staff have seen it many times. Costs a small fee and gives you numbers you can rely on.
And while you are there, get the whole picture: the axle weights let you check against your vehicle's gross axle weight ratings, not just the total. What a gross axle weight rating is and why it binds separately is the reason a scale trip is worth more than a tongue number alone.
2. A dedicated tongue weight scale
A purpose-built device that the trailer's coupler rests on, reading the downward force directly.
Accurate enough, reusable, and it lets you re-check every time you load differently, which is the real advantage. A trailer weighed once and then loaded differently is an unweighed trailer.
Check the device's own rating range before buying: they are made for bands, and one rated far above your tongue weight reads poorly at the bottom of its range.
3. A bathroom scale and a lever
The method that gets you a real number with equipment you own, and it works because of a simple mechanical principle.
A bathroom scale on its own will usually not read a trailer tongue directly, because most tongue weights exceed a domestic scale's range and because putting a coupler on a glass scale breaks the scale.
The lever version: a beam is set up so that one end rests on a pivot block and the other rests on the bathroom scale, with the trailer's coupler bearing down at a measured point along the beam. The scale reads a fraction of the true weight, and the fraction is determined by where the coupler sits relative to the pivot and the scale. Multiply accordingly.
Get the arrangement and the arithmetic from a source that shows the geometry, because the multiplier depends entirely on the distances and getting it wrong gives you a confident wrong number. We are not printing a beam layout here, since a diagram is what makes it correct and a paragraph is what makes it approximate.
Set it up so nothing can roll, shift or fall. Chock the trailer wheels, keep the trailer coupled to something or supported by its jack, and keep hands and feet clear of anything under load.
4. Ask the seller, then verify
The weakest, and worth stating because it is what most people actually do. A dealer's stated tongue weight is for the trailer as built, usually dry, usually without options, and usually without your things in it.
Treat it as a starting point and weigh it once loaded. The difference between dry weight, GVWR, UVW and NCC is where most of the error in a quoted figure comes from.
When to weigh
Once, properly, for the trailer as you actually load it. That gives you a baseline and tells you whether your loading habit is in the window.
Again whenever the load changes materially. A new appliance, a generator, water tanks filled, a heavy item moved front to back, a rack added.
And before a long trip with anything unusual on board.
Not every trip. The point is to learn your trailer, and once you know that your usual load produces a figure comfortably inside your window, checking every weekend is not adding information.
Where you stop
- Chock the wheels. Every method here involves a trailer that is not attached to a vehicle at some point, and a trailer that rolls with somebody near the coupler is the injury in this article.
- Never get under a trailer supported only by its jack.
- Never lift a coupler by hand to feel whether it is heavy. This is not a measurement and it is a back injury.
- Do not weigh on a slope. Every method assumes level ground and the reading is wrong on a grade.
- If the number comes back above your vehicle's published cap, the answer is to redistribute or to reduce the load, not to buy hardware. Weight distribution moves load between axles and does not remove tongue weight from the vehicle.
- Trailer axle, bearing, brake and suspension work is a shop job. If weighing reveals an axle overloaded, that is a loading fix and possibly a trailer-capacity conversation, not a modification you make yourself.
The short version
The percentage is a design target and weighing is a measurement, and only the measurement tells you what your trailer is doing today. Get a real number from a public truck scale once, and from a dedicated tongue scale or a properly laid-out lever setup whenever the load changes. Compare it against your vehicle's own published tongue cap, not against the percentage, when the two disagree. Too little tongue weight causes sway that no hardware fixes; too much eats payload and lifts the front axle. Chock the wheels, work on level ground, and never lift a coupler to guess.
