Bed-Mounted vs Frame-Mounted Hitch: Where the Load Goes
Every rated bed hitch reaches the frame. The names describe where the hardware is visible, not where the load ends up.
That is worth establishing first, because the naming makes it sound as though one option loads the bed and one loads the frame, and a system that loaded the sheet metal of a pickup bed would not be a hitch, it would be a hole in the making.
What the two arrangements actually are
A frame-mounted system installs rails or a mounting structure that bolts through the bed floor to brackets attached to the truck's frame rails underneath. The bed floor is drilled, and the load path goes through those brackets into the frame.
The visible result in the bed varies: traditional rail systems leave two crossrails permanently in the bed; under-bed systems leave only small puck holes at the surface.
A bed-mounted or over-bed system is the traditional arrangement where a substantial plate or rail assembly sits on the bed floor, again bolted through to frame brackets.
A puck or under-bed system, increasingly what people mean by frame-mounted, uses factory or aftermarket mounting points beneath the bed, with removable pucks at the bed surface. Hardware drops in and comes out, and with it removed the bed is nearly flat.
And on many recent trucks there is a fourth option: a factory-prepped package, where the truck came from the manufacturer with the under-bed structure and the puck holes already there. Check whether your truck has this before buying anything, because it changes the job entirely.
The differences that actually matter to you
Since all of them reach the frame, choose on these.
What the bed looks like when you are not towing
The biggest practical difference and the one people care about after six months.
A rail-and-plate system leaves permanent rails across the bed, which interfere with cargo, with sheet material laid flat, and with a bed cover.
An under-bed or puck system leaves the bed nearly flat with the hardware out, with only small covered openings.
If the truck is a work truck or a family vehicle as well as a tow vehicle, this is probably the deciding factor.
How hard the hardware is to remove
Puck systems: usually minutes, no tools or few tools. That means it actually gets removed.
Rail systems: the head comes out and the rails stay.
Full plate systems: removable in principle, and heavy enough that it happens rarely.
A hitch that is inconvenient to remove is a hitch that stays in, which is worth being honest with yourself about.
Whether the truck came prepared for it
If your truck has a factory puck system, using it is cheaper, faster and structurally intended by the manufacturer. Look under a bed mat or a liner: the puck covers are easy to miss.
Resale and reversibility
An under-bed system leaves a visually intact bed. A rail system leaves rails or, if removed, visible holes.
Coupling type
Whether you need a fifth-wheel plate or a gooseneck ball is decided entirely by the trailer, and both are available in both mounting styles. A kingpin needs a plate and an arched neck with a coupler needs a ball, and neither is a preference. Watch the ratings when you shop, though: a truck's headline tow figure is frequently the bed-mounted number rather than the receiver number, which is the same trap the "properly equipped" qualifier hides.
What does not differ
Two things people expect to differ and that do not.
Capacity is not determined by the category. A rated under-bed system and a rated rail system for the same truck are frequently rated the same, and the rating belongs to the specific system on the specific vehicle rather than to the style. Read the rating for the actual kit for your actual truck.
Neither raises your truck's rating. Nothing bolted to a truck raises a manufacturer rating. A bed hitch lets you use a rating the manufacturer may publish separately for bed-mounted towing, which is a different thing: that figure was always there, and the hitch is the equipment it assumed.
Payload, which is where these rigs actually run out
Bed-mounted towing concentrates a large pin weight directly into the truck bed, and pin weight on a fifth wheel or gooseneck is proportionally larger than the tongue weight of a conventional trailer.
All of it counts against payload. And so does the hitch hardware, which people forget because it is bolted in and feels like part of the truck.
On a heavy-duty truck pulling a fifth wheel, payload is normally the binding constraint rather than the tow rating. Payload versus towing capacity is the calculation that decides it, and it should be run before the trailer is bought rather than after.

Installation, and why this article does not describe one
These systems bolt to a truck's frame, usually through a drilled bed floor, sometimes with brackets that must be positioned to specific frame features, always to specific torque figures.
Four reasons the procedure is not here:
The instructions are vehicle-specific and kit-specific, and following the wrong ones produces an assembly that looks installed.
Drilling a bed floor over unknown territory can hit a fuel line, a brake line, a wiring harness or a fuel tank. Truck underbody layouts differ, and the kit's instructions exist partly to tell the installer what is under each hole.
Torque matters and is specified. An under-torqued structural fastener is a fastener that works loose under cyclic load, and this assembly sees cyclic load every mile.
And the rating belongs to the installed assembly. A correctly rated kit installed wrong is not a rated hitch.
A shop that installs bed hitches does this routinely, has the vehicle-specific information, and warrants the work. That is the right transaction here, and it is not a large fraction of what the trailer costs.
What to ask before buying
1. Does my truck have a factory prep package? Look for puck covers under the bed liner and check the manual.
2. Is there a kit specific to my truck, year and cab and bed configuration? Universal fits exist and vehicle-specific kits are better.
3. What is the kit's rating, and does it cover my trailer's gross weight and pin weight?
4. What will be left in the bed with the hardware removed?
5. Will the installation interfere with a bed liner, a cover, a spray-in coating or an existing accessory?
6. Who installs it and what do they warrant?
Where you stop
- Installation is a shop job. Structural attachment to a vehicle frame.
- Never drill a bed floor without the kit's own instructions showing what is beneath.
- Never modify a frame, a crossmember, a bracket or a hitch. A modified assembly has no rating.
- Never use a kit not rated for your trailer's pin weight, and remember the hardware weighs something too.
- Inspect the mounting points periodically for movement, elongated holes, cracking or corrosion, and if you find any of those, stop towing and get it looked at.
- A hitch bought second-hand or already fitted to a used truck has an unknown history. Have the mounting inspected before you load it.
The short version
Every rated bed hitch loads the frame, so the category names describe what you see in the bed rather than where the force goes. Choose on how flat the bed is with the hardware out, how easily it comes out, and whether your truck already has a factory prep package, which many recent trucks do. Capacity belongs to the specific kit on the specific truck rather than to the style. Payload, including the pin weight and the hitch itself, is what actually binds on these rigs. And the installation is a shop job, because it is a structural attachment and the rating belongs to the assembly, not the box.
