What a Published Tow Rating Is and Is Not

A manufacturer's headline towing figure is a maximum available rating. Read that phrase literally. It means: across every configuration of this nameplate that the manufacturer builds, one of them, optioned in one specific way, is rated to this number.

It does not mean:

  • That a truck with this badge on the tailgate is rated to that number.
  • That your truck is rated to that number.
  • That you may load a trailer to that number and be within all of your other limits.

The third point is the one that catches most people, and it is why this site keeps returning to payload. A truck can be comfortably under its tow rating and simultaneously over its payload, because the trailer's tongue weight lands on the truck. Why Two Websites Give Your Truck Two Different Numbers

Not carelessness, mostly. Four structural reasons:

They are quoting different configurations. A site quoting the max-tow build and a site quoting a mid-trim crew cab are both right about different trucks. Neither is right about yours unless it says which configuration it means.

They are quoting different model years. Ratings move between years. A page that was accurate in 2023 is not automatically wrong, it is just about a 2023.

They are quoting different claims from the same manufacturer. This is more common than you would expect. On Ram's own capability page, checked 2026-07-30, three different maximum-towing figures appear depending on which claim you read: a hero figure of 11,320 lb, a lineup claim of up to 11,610 lb, and a per-engine card showing 10,000 lb for the highest-output engine. All three are Ram's own numbers, published simultaneously, each true of a different thing. An aggregator that picks one and calls it "the" figure has not made an error so much as flattened a distinction.

They are copying each other. Once a number enters circulation it propagates, including the wrong ones, and a figure repeated on twenty sites looks more authoritative than the manufacturer document it was mistranscribed from.

The practical consequence: agreement between aggregators is not evidence, and disagreement between them is not resolvable by voting. Only the manufacturer's own documentation and your own vehicle's labels settle it.

The Four Things That Move the Number Within One Model Year

Within a single nameplate and a single year, the tow rating moves with:

There is a counterintuitive lesson buried in that first row, and it is verifiable from Ram's own published figures: the highest-horsepower engine in a lineup is frequently not the highest-towing one, because a heavy performance engine adds curb weight and consumes payload. Horsepower sells trucks. Cooling capacity, axle ratio, and curb weight determine what they can pull.

How This Site Sources Every Figure

3. A manufacturer VIN tool, if one exists for your vehicle. Ford publishes a Towing Calculator that takes a VIN for 2020-and-newer F-Series pickups and returns Max Trailer Weight and Max Tongue Load for that specific truck, letting you enter occupants, cargo, and accessories. Ford's own note alongside it: "Before towing, review your Owner's Manual and the RV & Trailer Towing Guide for information specific to your vehicle." A VIN-specific answer from the manufacturer is the best thing available short of a scale.

4. A public scale. Ratings tell you the ceiling. A scale tells you where you actually are. Weigh the rig loaded, with everyone aboard, and compare each axle against its GAWR.

Often not. Can I trust two spec sites that agree with each other?

Does the tow rating account for my passengers and cargo?
