GAWR Explained: The Axle Limit That Can Beat GVWR
Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) is the maximum weight one axle of your vehicle is allowed to carry, set separately for the front axle and the rear axle. GVWR caps the vehicle's total loaded weight; GAWR caps each axle individually. That distinction matters because weight is rarely distributed evenly front to back, and a trailer's tongue weight in particular lands almost entirely on the rear axle. The result: you can be well under your total GVWR and still be over your rear GAWR, and an overloaded axle is exactly as dangerous as an overloaded vehicle, tire failure, axle damage, and reduced braking and steering control all follow the same physics either way. GAWR, Front and Rear: What It Actually Limits
Every vehicle with a GVWR also carries two GAWR figures, front and rear, and the two rarely split the total evenly. GAWR is set by the manufacturer based on the strength of the axle itself and everything attached to it, the tires, brakes, suspension, and bearings rated to carry that specific axle's share of the load. Exceed it and you're asking those specific components to carry more than they were engineered for, regardless of what the total vehicle weight adds up to.
Both front GAWR and rear GAWR must be respected independently. Passing the GVWR check tells you nothing about whether either axle individually is over its limit.
How You Can Be Under GVWR and Still Over GAWR
This is the scenario that catches careful owners off guard, because it feels contradictory: the total math checks out, but a shop's scale or a weigh station flags one axle as overloaded.
It happens through uneven weight distribution. GVWR is a single ceiling for the vehicle's total weight. GAWR is two separate ceilings, one per axle, and nothing about staying under GVWR guarantees the weight is split evenly between them. Load cargo toward the back of the bed, mount heavy equipment over the rear axle, or hitch a trailer with meaningful tongue weight, and a disproportionate share of every added pound lands on the rear axle specifically, while the front axle may still have room to spare.
Worked Illustrative Example: Uneven Load, One Axle Over

Say a truck has:
- GVWR: 7,000 lb
- Front GAWR: 3,700 lb
- Rear GAWR: 3,700 lb
- Curb weight: 5,500 lb (front axle share ~3,000 lb, rear axle share ~2,500 lb, a typical front-heavy empty-truck split)
Now hitch a trailer with 900 lb of tongue weight and add 200 lb of gear loaded toward the tailgate. Total added weight: 1,100 lb. Total vehicle weight: 5,500 + 1,100 = 6,600 lb, comfortably under the 7,000 lb GVWR.
But tongue weight and rear-loaded cargo don't split evenly between the axles, they land almost entirely on the rear axle. If that 1,100 lb lands roughly 900 lb rear-heavy (a plausible split given where tongue weight and tailgate-area cargo actually sit), the rear axle now carries approximately 2,500 + 900 = 3,400 lb, still under the 3,700 lb rear GAWR in this illustration, but the margin has shrunk dramatically compared to the vehicle-total check, which showed 400 lb of room remaining. Push the tongue weight or rear cargo up further, and the rear axle can cross its 3,700 lb limit while the total vehicle weight is still hundreds of pounds under GVWR. That is the trap: the GVWR check passes right up until the rear axle alone fails, and a single number never shows you that.
Why Tongue Weight Is the Usual Culprit
The single most common way a tow rig ends up over rear GAWR while under GVWR is tongue weight. A trailer's tongue weight, typically 10 to 15% of the trailer's loaded weight for a conventional bumper-pull setup, presses straight down on the hitch, which sits behind the rear axle. That entire downward force is carried almost exclusively by the rear axle, not distributed across the vehicle. Add passengers, a full bed of gear, and a heavy trailer's tongue weight together, and the rear axle can be doing nearly all of the extra work while the front axle barely notices. These numbers, along with your GVWR, are specific to your vehicle as built, not a general figure for the model line. Exceeding a GAWR stresses exactly the components rated to that axle, tires, brakes, suspension, bearings, and, on some vehicles, the axle housing itself. The consequences track closely with an overloaded GVWR: reduced braking performance concentrated at the overloaded end, tire overload and a higher risk of blowout (tires themselves carry their own load-rating limit, stamped on the sidewall), premature suspension wear, and reduced stability, all worse than a GVWR overload alone because the strain concentrates on one axle's parts instead of being shared across the vehicle. A commercial or DOT scale, or a public truck-stop scale that reads per-axle weight, is the only way to confirm you're within both GAWR figures on a loaded rig, since a total-weight check alone cannot tell you.
