BMW X7 Towing Capacity: 7,500 lb, With One Condition

BMW rates the 2027 X7 xDrive40i to tow 7,500 pounds, and it attaches a condition in the same sentence: "with the available factory-installed hitch." That wording is from BMW USA's own X7 page, read September 11, 2026. The same page does not state a tow rating for the V8 X7 M60i. BMW's press materials have used the same 7,500 lb figure since the X7 launched, and for the 2026 ALPINA XB7 as well. Before you hitch anything, confirm the rating for your exact configuration in the owner's manual and read the payload on the placard in your driver's door jamb.

BMW X7 towing capacity: what BMW actually publishes

Most pages ranking for this search are dealer pages. Here is what BMW itself says, document by document.

BMW press release, first-ever 2019 X7October 16, 20182019 X7"factory installed tow hitch, rated for 7,500 lbs."

All three were read on September 11, 2026. Note what is missing: the current BMW page names the xDrive40i in its towing sentence and gives no figure for the M60i. BMW does not publish payload, GVWR or a tongue weight limit on the page we read.

The word "available" is doing the work

On the xDrive40i, BMW calls the factory-installed hitch "available." That means it is an option, not a certainty. If the X7 you are looking at, new or used, did not leave the factory with it, BMW's sentence does not describe that vehicle.

This matters more than it sounds. An aftermarket receiver bolted on later is rated by its own manufacturer, to its own class, and does not inherit BMW's figure by being attached to the same car. The rating on a hitch label and the rating of the vehicle are two separate limits, and the lower one governs. Our guide to hitch classes explains why you read the label on the hardware rather than the class number.

The ALPINA wording is different: BMW calls its receiver hitch "standard." That is a difference in what comes with the car, not in the rating. Both documents say 7,500 lbs.

If you are buying a used X7, a BMW dealer can tell you from the VIN whether the hitch was factory-installed. Ask before you ask about anything else.

From 335 hp to 631 hp, and the rating never moved

This is the part no dealer page puts side by side, and it corrects one of the most common towing assumptions.

BMW documentModelOutput BMW statesTow rating BMW states
2019 launch releaseX7 xDrive40i335 hp, 330 lb-ft7,500 lbs with factory hitch

2026 ALPINA XB7 releaseALPINA XB7 MANUFAKTUR631 hp, 590 lb-ftUp to 7,500 lbs

Across every BMW document we read that states a figure, the X7's tow rating is 7,500 lbs, whether the engine makes 335 horsepower or 631. Power decides how easily a vehicle pulls a trailer. It does not decide how much trailer the vehicle is allowed to pull. That limit is set by everything else in the chain: the hitch and its mounting, the structure behind it, the brakes that have to stop the combined mass, cooling, the axle ratings and the combined weight the vehicle is engineered for.

So if you are paying for a V8 because you want to tow more, BMW's own documents do not support that reason. Buy the engine for the way it drives. Buy the tow rating by reading it.

What BMW does not say about the M60i

BMW's current page describes the X7 M60i's 4.4-liter V8 with 48V mild-hybrid technology and 523 horsepower. Its towing sentence names only the xDrive40i. Many dealer pages say every X7 is rated 7,500 lbs. That may well be right, and the history above suggests it, but we could not confirm it for the 2027 M60i on BMW's own page, so we do not state it. The owner's manual for your M60i, or a BMW dealer working from your VIN, will.

Payload is the tighter limit

A trailer does not only pull. A conventional trailer rests part of its weight on the hitch ball, and that tongue weight is carried by the vehicle, out of the same allowance as your passengers, your luggage and the hitch hardware. We cover the mechanism in payload vs towing capacity, and how to estimate and measure the load in tongue weight explained.

BMW's page publishes no payload figure. Your X7 carries one on a placard. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110 requires the statement "The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed XXX kilograms or XXX pounds" on a placard on the driver's side B-pillar or an approved alternative location, for vehicles with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less (49 CFR 571.110, read September 11, 2026).

Illustrative arithmetic, with every assumption stated:

  • A trailer loaded to 6,000 lb, at 13 percent tongue weight: 780 lb on the ball
  • Ball mount, ball and hardware, assumed: 50 lb
  • Four adults and two children, assumed: 900 lb
  • Luggage in the cargo area, assumed: 200 lb

Total drawn from payload: 1,930 lb. The trailer sits well inside BMW's 7,500 lb figure. Whether your X7 can carry the rest is answered by one sentence on the door jamb placard, and on a heavily optioned three-row luxury SUV it is not automatic.

How much trailer makes sense behind an X7

Plan against roughly 80 percent of the rating rather than the rating itself. On 7,500 lbs, that puts a realistic shopping figure near 6,000 lbs of loaded trailer. The reasoning, and why the margin exists, is in the 80 percent towing rule.

Judge trailers by GVWR, their maximum loaded weight, not by dry weight.

Comfortable. Boat trailers, enclosed cargo trailers, utility trailers and smaller travel trailers whose GVWR sits inside that planning figure and whose loaded tongue weight fits your placard alongside your passengers.

At the edge. Trailers that pass 7,500 lbs but not the margin, and long trailers of any weight. Length and frontal area change how a rig behaves in crosswinds and when passed by trucks. Whether BMW permits a weight-distributing hitch with the factory receiver, and how, is an owner's manual question. Do not assume.

The wrong vehicle. Anything whose loaded weight approaches or exceeds the rating, and any fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailer, which mounts in a truck bed.

Trailer Assist helps you reverse, not tow more

BMW's page lists an available Trailer Assist feature that can perform automated maneuvers when parking a trailer. That is a genuine help with the hardest part of towing for most drivers. It does not change the rating, the payload, or what the hitch can bear.

What changes an X7's rating

  • The factory-installed hitch. BMW ties the xDrive40i's 7,500 lbs to it.
  • Model. The current BMW page states a figure for the xDrive40i only.
  • Model year. Ratings can change between years. A number without a year is not yours.
  • The hitch, ball mount and ball. The lowest-rated part of the chain sets the ceiling.
  • Accessories and heavy options. They take payload away permanently.
  • Trailer brakes. Whether the trailer needs its own brakes depends on its weight and your state's rule. Check your state's vehicle code, and check the manual for BMW's brake requirements.

Reading your own X7, in order

  1. The Tire and Loading Information placard. NHTSA's tire safety page, read September 11, 2026, places it on the driver's side door edge or post. Read the "combined weight of occupants and cargo" sentence.
  2. The certification label, which federal rules require to state the GVWR and a GAWR "for each axle" (49 CFR 567.4, read September 11, 2026).
  3. The owner's manual towing section: the rating for your model, the tongue weight limit, and any hitch or brake requirements.
  4. A public scale, loaded and hitched.

If a dealer page and your door jamb disagree, the label and the manual win.

Frequently asked questions

What is the towing capacity of a BMW X7?
BMW USA's page, read September 11, 2026, gives 7,500 pounds for the 2027 X7 xDrive40i "with the available factory-installed hitch." BMW's release for the 2026 ALPINA XB7 MANUFAKTUR also states up to 7,500 lbs. Your owner's manual confirms the rating for your vehicle.

Does the X7 M60i tow more than the xDrive40i?
Not on any BMW document we read. The current page gives no M60i figure, and across BMW documents that do state one, the rating stays at 7,500 lbs from a 335 hp model to a 631 hp ALPINA. More power does not raise a tow rating.

Does every BMW X7 come with a tow hitch?
No. BMW describes the factory-installed hitch on the xDrive40i as "available," meaning optional. BMW calls the ALPINA XB7 MANUFAKTUR's receiver hitch standard. Check whether your vehicle has the factory hitch before relying on BMW's figure.

Can a BMW X7 tow a travel trailer?
Yes, within limits. Trailers whose loaded weight sits inside roughly 6,000 lbs, and whose loaded tongue weight your placard can carry alongside your passengers, are a realistic match. Fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailers are not, because they need a truck bed.

The short version

BMW publishes 7,500 lbs for the 2027 X7 xDrive40i with the available factory-installed hitch, the same figure it has used since launch and for the ALPINA XB7. The condition matters, the M60i figure is not on BMW's current page, and horsepower never moved the number. Payload, printed on your door jamb, is usually the limit you meet first. The door jamb placard and the owner's manual for your exact VIN, model and model year are the authority.
