Read the two words that do the work in that sentence: up to. It is the ceiling for the most favorable grade and drivetrain combination in the lineup, not a figure that applies to every Sequoia on the lot, and it is not the number that will decide whether you can pull the trailer you are looking at. Payload usually decides that, and payload is printed on the placard in your own driver's door jamb. Nothing on this page overrides that placard or your owner's manual.

Toyota Sequoia Towing Capacity: The Figure and Its Limits

Why the Sequoia's Payload Is the Real Story

The current Sequoia is a hybrid. Toyota's own release for the 2025 model year describes the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain as the powertrain of the lineup, and a hybrid system means a battery and a motor generator that a non-hybrid full-size SUV does not carry. That trailer sits comfortably under 9,520 lb even fully loaded, so the tow rating says yes.

Now the payload side, loaded to the trailer's GVWR:

• Tongue weight, 7,150 lb at 13 percent: 930 lb
• Weight-distributing hitch hardware: 100 lb
• Two adults, two children: 500 lb
• Cargo in the third row and on the roof: 250 lb

Total: 1,780 lb of payload consumed. Whether your Sequoia can do that is answered by one number on one sticker, and it is not the 9,520 lb figure. Note also that the trailer's brochure hitch weight of 685 lb is a dry figure, measured before water, propane and 1,390 lb of your belongings go in. What Changes a Sequoia's Rating

• Grade. Heavier grades carry more equipment, and equipment weight comes out of both payload and towing capacity. Toyota's "up to" figure belongs to the lightest qualifying build.
• Drivetrain. Four-wheel drive adds weight. Where a grade offers both, the four-wheel-drive version is normally rated below the two-wheel-drive one.
• Suspension and package content. Load-leveling rear air suspension, adaptive dampers, larger wheels and a full-length roof rack all add mass.
