SUV vs Minivan Towing: Which Pulls a Small Trailer Better

In the SUV vs minivan towing question, a minivan is often a fair match for a compact SUV, while midsize and full-size SUVs pull ahead. Several current minivans are rated at 3,500 lb when properly equipped, which is the same ceiling as many compact SUVs in their towing configuration. A midsize SUV rated at 5,000 lb or a full-size SUV rated higher gives more margin. For a loaded trailer up to about 2,800 lb, a properly equipped minivan can do the job. Ratings vary by configuration, so confirm yours on the door-jamb label and in the owner's manual.

Towing capacity is not a suggestion. It is a safety limit.

Why Minivan Owners Often Do Not Know They Can Tow

Minivans are marketed for school runs and road trips, not trailers. Many are sold without a hitch, so owners assume towing is off the table. In fact, several current minivans publish a real tow rating, usually conditioned on an accessory or factory hitch and wiring.

At the same time, "SUV" covers everything from a small crossover rated at 1,750 lb to a body-on-frame full-size SUV rated near 10,000 lb. Comparing "an SUV" with "a minivan" is meaningless until you name the class. So this comparison lines up the published numbers class by class.

SUV vs Minivan Towing: The Published Numbers

Here are manufacturer figures we read on September 27, 2026. Each applies to a specific model year and configuration, not to every version of that vehicle.

VehicleClassPublished tow rating and condition
2026 Kia CarnivalMinivan3,500 lb braked, 1,000 lb unbraked (Kia spec sheet)
2026 Kia Carnival HEVMinivan, hybrid2,500 lb with trailer brakes, 1,000 lb without (Kia spec sheet)
2026 Honda OdysseyMinivan3,500 lb with the Honda dealer-installed accessory towing package
2026 Toyota Sienna Woodland EditionMinivanStandard tow hitch rated up to 3,500 lb
2026 Toyota RAV4, listed AWD gradesCompact SUVUp to 3,500 lb; all FWD models and the LE AWD rated 1,750 lb
2027 Ford ExplorerMidsize three-row SUV5,000 lb maximum
2027 Ford ExpeditionFull-size SUVUp to 6,000 lb for 4×2; up to 9,600 lb for select 4×4 with Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package

Two findings stand out. First, a properly equipped minivan and a compact SUV in its towing configuration often share the same 3,500 lb ceiling. Second, the SUV advantage only shows up once you move to a midsize or full-size SUV, and even then the exact configuration can swing the rating by thousands of pounds.

The Minivan Details That Change the Number

The minivan figures carry conditions that matter more than the headline.

Braked vs unbraked. Kia's 2026 Carnival specifications list 3,500 lb braked and 1,000 lb unbraked. Many small utility and camping trailers have no brakes of their own. For those, the working limit is 1,000 lb, not 3,500 lb. That one line changes what a minivan can actually pull.

Hybrid vs gas. Kia lists the 2026 Carnival HEV at 2,500 lb with brakes, a full 1,000 lb below the gas version. Hybrid and gas versions of the same nameplate are not interchangeable for towing.

The hitch is part of the rating. Honda's 2026 Odyssey feature guide says all Odyssey trims have a 3,500 lb towing capability when equipped with a Honda dealer-installed accessory towing package, which includes a Class II hitch, towing kit and wiring harness. Toyota's October 23, 2025 release for the 2026 Sienna lists a tow hitch with up to 3,500 lb towing capability as standard on the Woodland Edition. The rating assumes that equipment. Our guide to the hitch class label explains why the hitch rating can be the lowest link.

Where SUVs Actually Win

Compact SUVs: roughly a tie, sometimes a loss

A compact SUV is not automatically a better tower than a minivan. Toyota's 2026 RAV4 release rates listed AWD hybrid and plug-in grades at up to 3,500 lb, but all FWD models and the LE AWD at 1,750 lb. A minivan rated at 3,500 lb can out-tow the lower-rated compact SUV versions. Our guide on whether a compact SUV can tow a small camper covers this class in depth.

Midsize SUVs: a clear step up

A three-row midsize SUV rated at 5,000 lb, such as the 2027 Explorer at Ford's listed maximum, gives 1,500 lb more rating than a 3,500 lb minivan. At 80 percent, that moves the comfortable loaded trailer from about 2,800 lb to about 4,000 lb. Our mid-size SUV towing capacity comparison shows how the class varies.

Full-size SUVs: a different league, in the right configuration

A body-on-frame full-size SUV with the right package is rated far above the minivans above. Ford lists select 2027 Expedition 4×4 models at up to 9,600 lb with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package. But the 4×2 version is listed at up to 6,000 lb, which is a reminder that the badge alone does not tell you the rating.

Payload: The Family Vehicle Trap

Minivans and three-row SUVs are bought to carry people. That is exactly what eats the capacity you need for towing.

Tongue weight, commonly planned at 10 to 15 percent of the loaded trailer, comes out of payload, along with every passenger and bag. A 2,800 lb trailer puts about 280 to 420 lb on the hitch. Add a full load of passengers and luggage, and a family hauler can run out of payload well before it reaches its tow rating.

Read the Tire and Loading Information placard in the driver's door jamb for the maximum combined weight of occupants and cargo. Subtract tongue weight, passengers, cargo and hitch hardware. If the result is negative, the vehicle is overloaded no matter what the tow rating says. Our explainer on payload vs towing capacity walks through the calculation. This applies to both classes, but it bites hardest on a minivan loaded to every seat.

What Each Rating Leaves Room For

Using the 80 percent planning habit, which is a margin many towers keep but not a manufacturer requirement:

Tow vehicle limitComfortable loaded trailer at 80 percent
1,000 lb unbraked limit800 lb
2,500 lb2,000 lb
3,500 lb2,800 lb
5,000 lb4,000 lb
9,600 lb7,680 lb

Match your specific trailer against that column using its GVWR rather than its dry weight, because dry weight leaves out water, propane, batteries and gear. Teardrops, pop-ups, utility trailers and small boats vary widely by size and build, so the trailer's own plate is the only number that counts.

The Honest Trade-Off

If your trailer is small and braked and your family needs sliding doors and easy third-row access, a properly equipped minivan can be the more practical vehicle, with no towing penalty against a compact SUV in its towing configuration. If you want room to grow into a bigger trailer, or you tow near 3,500 lb with a full cabin, a midsize or full-size SUV buys margin that the minivans listed here do not offer. Neither choice lets you exceed a rating. The best tow vehicle is the one whose limits your real loaded weight clears with room to spare.

How to Choose Without Getting Hurt

  1. Get the trailer's real weight from its GVWR or a scale ticket.
  2. Check whether the trailer has brakes. An unbraked limit can be far lower than the headline rating.
  3. Pick the exact configuration. Gas vs hybrid, FWD vs AWD and hitch package all change the rating.
  4. Confirm the rating in the manufacturer's towing information or owner's manual for that model year.
  5. Check payload with your usual passengers and cargo aboard.
  6. Check the hitch chain. The receiver, ball mount, ball and coupler each carry a rating; the lowest one sets the limit.

Never exceed any rating in the chain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an SUV or a minivan better for towing?

It depends on the class. A properly equipped minivan rated at 3,500 lb matches many compact SUVs. Midsize SUVs rated at 5,000 lb and full-size SUVs rated higher give more margin. Compare the exact configurations you are considering.

How much can a minivan tow?

Several 2026 minivans are rated at 3,500 lb when properly equipped, including the Kia Carnival (braked), the Honda Odyssey with its accessory towing package and the Toyota Sienna Woodland Edition. Kia lists the Carnival HEV at 2,500 lb with brakes.

Can a minivan tow a trailer without brakes?

Only up to its unbraked limit. Kia lists 1,000 lb unbraked for both the 2026 Carnival and Carnival HEV. Your owner's manual gives your vehicle's figure, and state law may require trailer brakes above a certain weight.

Can a minivan tow a pop-up camper?

Some small pop-ups can fit within a 3,500 lb rating with margin, but check the camper's GVWR, its brakes, the hitch rating and your payload with the family aboard before deciding.

Does a hybrid minivan tow less than a gas one?

It can. Kia lists the 2026 Carnival at 3,500 lb braked and the 2026 Carnival HEV at 2,500 lb with brakes. Check the figure for your exact powertrain.
