Why Every Heavy Duty Truck Towing Capacity Comparison Compares the Wrong Thing
Four structural problems, all of them present in the pages currently ranking for this search.
1. The hitch types are mixed. Gooseneck and fifth-wheel ratings are higher than conventional bumper-pull ratings, because the load sits ahead of the rear axle instead of behind the bumper. Comparing one brand's gooseneck maximum with another's conventional maximum is not a comparison at all. If you tow with a receiver hitch, the conventional rating is your rating, and it is the lower one.
2. The cabs are mixed. A regular cab weighs less than a crew cab, so it carries a higher combined rating. Almost nobody buys a regular cab three-quarter ton for family towing, and almost every headline figure comes from the lightest cab available.

The Ranking Pages Do Not Agree With Each Other

Reading the pages returned for this search on 2026-08-11, the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD's peak trailering figure appears as roughly 22,400 lb on some pages and roughly 22,070 lb on others. Its conventional figure appears as 20,000 lb on some and 18,500 lb on others. The same spread shows up across the other three nameplates. Some pages are describing the 2025 truck, some the 2026, some a regular cab, some a crew cab, some the max trailering package and some not, and most do not say which.
None of those pages is necessarily lying. They are quoting different rows of the same manufacturer table without printing the row. The effect on a reader is the same as if they were wrong: you cannot tell which figure applies to you, and a difference of 1,500 lb in a conventional rating is not a rounding error when you are deciding on a trailer.

Every published tow rating from these manufacturers is set under SAE J2807, the industry procedure that defines how gross combined weight rating and trailer weight rating are determined. That standard is why the numbers are broadly comparable in principle. It does not make two different configurations comparable in practice.
What Actually Separates These Four Trucks
Once you stop ranking headline figures, the honest differences are these:
- Engine character. All four offer a heavy-duty gas V8 and a big turbodiesel. The diesels carry the higher ratings and deliver torque low in the rev range, with engine braking on descents. The gas engines work harder and generate more heat on a long grade.
- Where the rating binds. On a diesel, gross combined weight rating usually binds first. On a gas truck, payload and the rear axle usually bind first.
- Hitch preparation from the factory. Gooseneck and fifth-wheel ratings require the factory prep package on all four. It is not something you add credibly afterward.
- Where the manufacturer prints your number. This one is genuinely different between brands. The Number That Decides a Heavy-Duty Purchase
Here is the arithmetic the ranking pages skip. Illustrative figures, describing no specific truck or trailer.
GMC publishes fifth-wheel and gooseneck pin weight at 15 to 25 percent of loaded trailer weight, and conventional tongue weight at 10 to 15 percent (GMC's own trailering FAQ, verified by this site 2026-07-30). GMC and Chevrolet are the same trucks, and the ranges are standard across the industry.
Take a fifth wheel loaded to 15,000 lb. At 20 percent, that is 3,000 lb sitting in your bed, directly over the rear axle, before anyone gets in.
- 3,000 lb pin weight
- 400 lb for two adults
- 150 lb for the fifth-wheel hitch itself
- 150 lb of tools, generator fuel, and bed clutter
3,700 lb of payload consumed. That figure has to fit under the payload number on the Tire and Loading Information placard in that truck's own door jamb, and the load over the rear axle has to fit under the rear gross axle weight rating on the certification label beside it. A meaningful number of crew-cab four-wheel-drive diesel three-quarter tons do not have 3,700 lb of payload. Their owners find out at a scale, or they never find out.

Gas vs Diesel Is a Payload Decision, Not a Power Decision
The gas-versus-diesel argument is almost always framed as horsepower and torque. That is the least useful frame for a buyer.

The trade nobody puts in a headline: a heavy-duty diesel can weigh several hundred pounds more than the gas V8 it replaces, and every one of those pounds comes out of payload. How to Run Your Own Comparison in Ten Minutes
For each specific truck you are cross-shopping, not each nameplate:
- Get the loaded weight of the trailer you actually intend to tow, not its dry weight. Dry weight excludes water, propane, batteries, and everything you own.
- Multiply by 20 percent for a fifth wheel or gooseneck, or by 13 percent for a conventional trailer, as a working estimate of pin or tongue weight.
- Add your people, your hitch hardware, and your bed cargo.
- Open the driver's door of the actual truck and read the payload figure on the yellow placard. If your total from step 3 exceeds it, that truck is out, whatever its tow rating says.
- Read the rear GAWR on the certification label and confirm the rear axle has room, because you can be under GVWR and over rear GAWR at the same time.

One engineering point that applies to all four, from Ford's own definition of gross combined weight rating: "The towing vehicle's braking system is rated for operation at the GVWR, not at the GCWR." The truck's brakes were engineered around the truck's own maximum weight, not the combined figure. Which heavy-duty truck tows the most?
It depends entirely on which configuration and which hitch type you compare, and the published figures for a single nameplate vary by thousands of pounds across its own lineup. The differences between configurations of one truck are larger than the differences between brands at the top of their ranges.
