Luxury SUV Towing Capacity Comparison: 7,500 to 9,096 lb
On each maker's own published figures, the 2026 Lexus GX tows the most of these four, up to 9,096 lbs, followed by the 2027 Lincoln Navigator at up to 8,700 lbs, the 2027 Cadillac Escalade at 8,100 lbs and the 2027 BMW X7 xDrive40i at 7,500 lbs. The smallest vehicle in the group has the highest rating, and every headline carries a condition. The bigger lesson is that the configuration you buy moves the number more than the badge does. Before you tow, confirm the rating for your exact configuration in the owner's manual and read the payload on your door jamb placard.
Luxury SUV towing capacity comparison: the published numbers
| Vehicle | Model year | Headline rating | Condition the maker attaches | Lowest configuration the maker publishes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lexus GX | 2026 | 9,096 lbs (Overtrail) | "with the standard tow hitch receiver" | 9,063 lbs (Premium, Premium+, Overtrail+) |
| Lincoln Navigator | 2027 | 8,700 lbs | 4×4, Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package, 22-inch wheels | 6,200 lbs (4×2 Navigator) |
| Cadillac Escalade | 2027 | 8,100 lbs (6.2L V8) | Footnote on Cadillac's page | 8,000 lbs (Escalade ESV) |
| BMW X7 | 2027 | 7,500 lbs (xDrive40i) | "with the available factory-installed hitch" | Only one figure published |
Sources, all read September 11, 2026: the Lexus USA Newsroom release on the 2026 GX, dated October 17, 2025; Lincoln's Navigator page; Cadillac's Escalade specifications page; and BMW USA's X7 page.
Lincoln's full published grid is worth setting out, because it holds the surprise in this comparison. The 4×4 Navigator with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package is rated 8,700 lbs on 22-inch wheels and 8,500 lbs on 24-inch wheels. The long-wheelbase Navigator L is rated 8,700 lbs on 22s and 8,400 lbs on 24s. In 4×2 form the Navigator is rated 6,200 lbs and the Navigator L 6,600 lbs. Lincoln lists the package contents as a trailer brake controller, a two-speed transfer case with neutral tow, and a 26mm engine radiator.
Rank by badge, and you can end up with the lowest rating in the group
Here is the finding no ranked list shows. The distance between the best and worst headline in this group is 1,596 lb, from the GX Overtrail's 9,096 down to the X7's 7,500. The distance between the best and worst configuration Lincoln publishes for the Navigator alone is 2,500 lb, from 8,700 down to 6,200.
So the nameplate is not the decision. The configuration is.
| Ranked by headline | Ranked by the lowest configuration each maker publishes |
|---|---|
| 1. Lexus GX, 9,096 lbs | 1. Lexus GX, 9,063 lbs |
| 2. Lincoln Navigator, 8,700 lbs | 2. Cadillac Escalade ESV, 8,000 lbs |
| 3. Cadillac Escalade, 8,100 lbs | 3. BMW X7 xDrive40i, 7,500 lbs |
| 4. BMW X7, 7,500 lbs | 4. Lincoln Navigator 4×2, 6,200 lbs |
A buyer who chooses the Navigator because it "tows 8,700" and then buys a rear-drive model, or buys a 4×4 without the package, owns the lowest-rated vehicle in this group. A 4×2 Navigator is rated 1,300 lb below the X7 and 2,863 lb below a GX Premium. The badge ranking and the configuration ranking disagree, and only one of them is on your door jamb.
Two other patterns are worth noticing. The GX barely varies: 33 lb separates its grades, and Lexus states its receiver is standard. And across this group the bigger body does not reliably tow more. Cadillac rates the longer Escalade ESV 100 lb below the Escalade, and Lincoln rates the Navigator L below the Navigator on 24-inch wheels.
Why the smallest SUV here out-tows the full-size ones
Lexus does not explain its rating, and neither does any maker. Size, price and horsepower are simply poor predictors. A tow rating reflects the whole vehicle: its structure, the hitch and its mounting, brakes, cooling, axle ratings and the combined weight it is engineered to handle, less its own weight. A heavy luxury vehicle carries a lot of its own weight before it carries anything else.
BMW's own history makes the power point clearly. BMW's 2019 X7 launch release, read September 11, 2026, rated the 335 hp xDrive40i and the 456 hp xDrive50i at the same 7,500 lbs with the factory hitch, and BMW's 2026 ALPINA XB7 release gives the same figure for a 631 hp version. More engine did not buy more rating.
The same four at an 80 percent planning margin
Many towing writers plan against about 80 percent of a published rating, because ratings assume conditions that heat, long grades, altitude and a well-stocked trailer do not respect. The reasoning is in the 80 percent towing rule.
| Vehicle and configuration | Published rating | About 80 percent |
|---|---|---|
| Lexus GX Premium | 9,063 lbs | 7,250 lbs |
| Lincoln Navigator 4×4, HD package, 22-inch wheels | 8,700 lbs | 6,960 lbs |
| Cadillac Escalade | 8,100 lbs | 6,480 lbs |
| BMW X7 xDrive40i with factory hitch | 7,500 lbs | 6,000 lbs |
| Lincoln Navigator 4×2 | 6,200 lbs | 4,960 lbs |
Compare trailers against these by their GVWR, the most they may weigh loaded, rather than their brochure dry weight.
What this comparison cannot tell you: payload
Not one of the four maker pages we read publishes a payload figure. That is the most important gap in any luxury SUV comparison, because payload is usually the limit these vehicles hit first.
Tongue weight is carried, not towed. It lands on the same allowance as your passengers, luggage and hitch hardware, and a three-row luxury SUV invites you to fill every seat. Heavy luxury equipment, from larger wheels to panoramic roofs, has taken its share of payload before you load anything. The three ratings and how they interact are set out in GVWR vs GCWR vs payload.
Your own number is on a sticker. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110 requires the statement "The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed XXX kilograms or XXX pounds" on a placard on the driver's side B-pillar or an approved alternative location, on vehicles with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less (49 CFR 571.110, read September 11, 2026).
Illustrative arithmetic for any of the four, with every assumption stated: a 6,000 lb loaded trailer at 13 percent puts 780 lb on the ball. Add hitch hardware, assumed at 100 lb, four adults and two children, assumed at 900 lb, and 200 lb of luggage. That is 1,980 lb drawn from payload, with a trailer at or inside every configuration's planning figure except the 4×2 Navigator's. Read your placard before you believe any rating in the table above.
How these compare with mainstream full-size SUVs
Luxury badges do not buy more towing. The mainstream full-size SUVs are compared on their makers' own figures in our full-size SUV towing capacity comparison. If your shortlist crosses into premium full-size territory from the other side, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer's towing capacity is worth reading on the same terms.
Which one fits which trailer
Categories, not promises. Every one still has to clear your own placard.
- Heaviest conventional trailer in this group. The GX has the highest published rating and the least variation between grades. It is also the smallest vehicle here, so check the payload arithmetic with your real passenger count.
- Heavy trailer and a full cabin. A 4×4 Navigator with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package on 22-inch wheels, with the factory brake controller the package includes. Confirm all three conditions on the specific vehicle.
- Mid-weight trailer. The Escalade and ESV, with the conditions in Cadillac's footnote confirmed in the owner's manual.
- Boats, cargo trailers and lighter campers. The X7 xDrive40i with the factory-installed hitch.
- Not in this group. Fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailers need a truck bed. So does anything whose loaded weight approaches a rating.
Reading your own vehicle, in order
- The Tire and Loading Information placard in the driver's door jamb: your payload.
- The certification label beside it: GVWR and the axle ratings.
- The owner's manual towing section for your model year and configuration: the rating, the tongue weight limit and the conditions behind the headline.
- A public scale, loaded and hitched.

Frequently asked questions
Which luxury SUV has the highest towing capacity?
Of these four, on the makers' own figures, the 2026 Lexus GX: 9,096 lbs for the Overtrail grade and 9,063 lbs for Premium, Premium+ and Overtrail+, with the standard tow hitch receiver.
Does the Lincoln Navigator tow more than the Cadillac Escalade?
Only when it is configured to. A 2027 Navigator 4×4 with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package is rated up to 8,700 lbs, above the Escalade's 8,100 lbs. A 4×2 Navigator is rated 6,200 lbs, well below the Escalade.
Does the BMW X7 need a hitch package to tow 7,500 lb?
BMW USA ties the xDrive40i's 7,500 lb rating to "the available factory-installed hitch," so the figure applies to vehicles that have it. Check whether the X7 you are looking at left the factory with that hitch.
Is a bigger luxury SUV always better for towing?
No. In this group the mid-size GX has the highest rating, the longer Escalade ESV is rated below the Escalade, and the Navigator L is rated below the Navigator on 24-inch wheels. Read the rating for the exact body and configuration.
The short version
On their makers' own pages, the GX leads at 9,096 lbs, the Navigator reaches 8,700 lbs only with 4×4, the package and 22-inch wheels, the Escalade is 8,100 lbs and the X7 xDrive40i is 7,500 lbs with the factory hitch. The Navigator's own configurations span more than the whole group's headlines, and payload, which no maker here publishes on those pages, is usually the first limit you meet. The door jamb placard and the owner's manual for your exact VIN, configuration and model year are the authority.
