Full-Size SUV Towing Capacity Comparison: Read First

Every comparison of these vehicles ranks three or four maximum tow ratings and declares a winner. That ranking cannot tell you what you can tow, because each of those numbers belongs to a different model year and a different configuration, and none of them is the number that will stop you. The published maximums here run from 8,400 lb to 10,000 lb, a spread of about 1,600 lb, while a single nameplate can vary by 800 lb between two builds in the same model year. The number that decides your trailer is payload minus tongue weight, on the placard in the door jamb of the specific vehicle you are looking at.

Below is the comparison as it can honestly be built, with the configuration printed in every cell.

No payload, GVWR, GCWR or tongue weight rating appears in that table for any of these vehicles, because none could be traced to a manufacturer document. That is a gap in the published material rather than in this page: manufacturers lead with tow ratings and rarely put payload in a press release, even though payload is what limits an SUV first.

The 8,200 vs 8,400 Argument, Settled

Search this topic and you will find pages quoting 8,200 lb for the current Tahoe and pages quoting 8,400 lb, apparently contradicting each other. Both are correct, and the specification sheet shows why in one line: 8,400 lb is the 5.3L Tahoe in two-wheel drive with max trailering. 8,200 lb is the same truck in four-wheel drive.

Four-wheel drive costs 200 lb of rating, because the hardware weighs something and vehicle weight is subtracted from combined capacity before a trailer is attached. Two more findings sit in the same table:

  • The bigger V8 tows less. GM rates the 6.2L below the 5.3L in every column. A tow rating is set by cooling, brakes and combined weight, not by horsepower.
  • The max trailering package is worth 400 to 500 lb on the gas V8s and nothing on the diesel, whose figures are identical with or without it.

That means one nameplate, in one model year, spans 7,600 lb to 8,400 lb. An 800 lb internal spread is half the entire distance between the lowest and highest vehicles in the table above. It is the single best argument against ranking these SUVs by headline.

The Yukon Matches the Tahoe, and Its Owners Are Told Less

GMC publishes up to 8,400 lb for the 2026 Yukon, the same ceiling Chevrolet publishes for the Tahoe. On a shared platform with shared powertrains that is exactly what you would expect, and it supports the conclusion above: between these two, the badge is a trim and price decision rather than a capability one.

The difference is in what each brand tells you. Chevrolet publishes the Tahoe's full spread, 7,600 lb to 8,400 lb, broken out by drivetrain, engine and package. GMC's Yukon page publishes only the top of the range, with the honest caveat that capacity "varies by engine, drivetrain and configuration" but no table behind it. So an owner of a four-wheel-drive 6.2L Yukon has been handed the two-wheel-drive 5.3L number by their own manufacturer's website, and cannot correct it from that website. If the Tahoe's pattern holds, their real rating is meaningfully lower, and this page will not guess at how much lower. What the Ranking Pages Get Wrong

1. The headline numbers are not measured on comparable vehicles. One is a lineup maximum stated as "up to". One belongs to a standard-wheelbase body with a particular engine tune. One is an available figure that assumes factory tow content is fitted. One is explicitly preliminary. Lining them up in a bar chart implies a like-for-like test that nobody ran.

2. Model years are mixed silently. The 2026 Grand Wagoneer's 10,000 lb and the 2025 car's 9,800 lb are the same nameplate one year apart. A comparison that does not print the year is comparing nothing in particular.

3. Bigger is not stronger. The long-wheelbase Grand Wagoneer L is rated below the standard-wheelbase car for 2025, and the Suburban is rated below the Tahoe for 2026. A longer body is a heavier body.

4. More powerful is not higher rated. Jeep attaches the 2026 10,000 lb figure to the Standard Output engine, not the High Output one, and GM rates the 6.2L Tahoe below the 5.3L.

5. None of them compares payload after tongue weight, which is the constraint that binds on every vehicle here.

The Comparison That Actually Decides It

For any full-size SUV on this list, ask these five questions in order.

The Arithmetic, on the Segment's Own Terms

Take a conventional travel trailer loaded to 7,000 lb, inside every published figure in the table above.

  • Tongue weight, 7,000 lb at 13 percent: 910 lb
  • Weight-distributing hitch hardware: 100 lb
  • Two adults and three children: 600 lb
  • Cargo behind the third row and on the roof: 300 lb

1,910 lb of payload consumed, and the tow rating never entered the calculation. A three-row SUV with four-wheel drive, a panoramic roof, captain's chairs and 22-inch wheels has spent a great deal of its payload allowance at the factory. Which full-size SUV tows the most?
On the figures above, the 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer leads at up to 10,000 lb in Standard Output configuration, then the 2025 and 2026 Toyota Sequoia at up to 9,520 lb, then the 2026 Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon at 8,400 lb in their best configurations. Treat that ordering as background rather than as your answer, because each figure describes a different configuration in a different year, and one of them is preliminary.

Why do two sites give the Tahoe different numbers?
Because they are quoting different rows of the same GM table. 8,400 lb is 2WD with the 5.3L and max trailering, 8,200 lb is the same truck in 4WD, and a 4WD 6.2L without max trailering is 7,600 lb. None of them is wrong. They are just not the same truck.

Is the GMC Yukon rated the same as the Chevrolet Tahoe?
At the top of the range, yes: GMC publishes up to 8,400 lb for the 2026 Yukon when properly equipped, matching Chevrolet's Tahoe maximum. But GMC does not publish the per-configuration breakdown that Chevrolet does, so a Yukon owner outside that best-case build has to get their real figure from the owner's manual, the doorframe label or GMC's Yukon trailering chart.

Is a full-size SUV enough for a 30-foot travel trailer?
Often on the tow rating, frequently not on payload, and length is not the deciding variable anyway. A 30-foot trailer with a 7,500 lb GVWR puts roughly 750 to 1,125 lb of tongue weight on the vehicle before passengers. Check that against the payload on your door jamb placard.

Should I buy a pickup instead?
If your loaded trailer is in the region where three-row SUV payload runs out, a half-ton pickup removes the constraint rather than working around it, at the cost of the third row. The deciding test is the payload arithmetic above, not the body style.


The door jamb placard and the owner's manual for your exact VIN and trim are the authority. Towing capacity, payload, GVWR and GCWR vary by engine, trim, wheelbase, drivetrain and installed equipment within a single model year, so a figure that is correct for one vehicle can be badly wrong for another of the same name.
