The GCWR is the manufacturer's ceiling for everything combined, the loaded truck plus the loaded trailer. The curb weight is what your truck weighs empty, with fluids and a full tank of fuel but nothing and no one else on board. Subtract one from the other and you get the advertised tow rating.
The problem is that nobody tows with an empty truck. The moment you add a driver, a passenger, a cooler, and a hitch, the truck weighs more than its curb weight, and every one of those pounds comes out of the same GCWR budget the trailer is drawing from.
What Actually Eats Your Towing Capacity
Here is the part most guides skip. The advertised number assumes a nearly empty vehicle. This table shows what quietly subtracts from it the day you tow, organized by what people actually forget, not by which term sounds most technical.

The last two rows are where people get caught. The tongue weight, the downward force the trailer places on your hitch, is typically 10 to 15 percent of the loaded trailer's weight for a conventional bumper-pull trailer (and 20-25 percent for a gooseneck or fifth-wheel pin). That weight does not sit on the trailer's axles. It sits on your truck, which means it counts against your truck's payload, right alongside the passengers and cargo.

Why the Number on the Ad Isn't Always Your Number
When a manufacturer advertises a headline tow rating, that figure belongs to exactly one version of the truck, usually the one built to tow the most. Change any of these and your number changes:
- Engine. A V8 or a turbocharged tow-oriented engine typically carries a higher GCWR than the base engine in the same truck.
- Axle ratio. A numerically higher rear-axle ratio (say 3.73 vs. 3.31) can add thousands of pounds of capacity.
- Cab and bed configuration. A crew cab with a long bed weighs more (higher curb weight) than a regular cab, which lowers what's left for the trailer.
- Drivetrain. 4WD adds curb weight compared with 2WD.
- Tow package. A factory Max Trailer Tow or Tow/Haul package can raise the rating dramatically, and its absence means the headline number simply does not apply to your truck.
Modern tow ratings from major automakers are established under SAE J2807, an industry standard that defines how a manufacturer must test to publish a GCWR and trailer weight rating. Among other things, J2807 assumes a 150-pound driver and a 150-pound passenger on board and about 10 percent of the trailer weight on the tongue. That standardization is good, it makes ratings comparable across brands, but it also means the published number already spends part of the budget on two occupants before you have loaded a single thing. Where to Find YOUR Vehicle's Real Numbers
You cannot calculate a real towing capacity from a website, including this one. You calculate it from the labels on your specific vehicle. In order of authority:
- The driver-side door-jamb label. Open your driver's door and look at the jamb. The Tire and Loading Information placard states your payload in plain language: "The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed XXXX lbs." That payload number is specific to your VIN. The same area lists your GVWR (the truck's own maximum loaded weight) and your axle ratings (GAWR). On many trucks with a factory tow package, a second white or yellow sticker near the latch lists a Max Trailer Weight or a GCWR.
- The owner's manual towing supplement. This is where you'll find your GCWR and the trailer weight rating tied to your engine, axle ratio, and package. Manufacturers often publish a separate towing guide for the model year with a lookup table.
- The manufacturer's VIN-based towing tool. Several automakers offer an online calculator that returns the rating for your exact build when you enter your VIN or configuration.
Note the order. The door jamb governs payload, the manual/tow guide governs GCWR, and the two can be printed in different places. Worked Example: A Half-Ton Pickup, Step by Step
Let's run the full calculation for a crew-cab half-ton pickup, the kind of truck in the Full-Size Pickups group, like a Ford F-150. The figures below are illustrative round numbers used to show the method. Do not tow to them. Read your own numbers off your own door jamb and owner's manual.
Step 1, Read the two governing numbers off the vehicle.
- GCWR (from the owner's manual for this configuration): 16,000 lb
- Curb weight (from the manual/spec sheet): 5,500 lb
- Payload (from the door-jamb Tire and Loading label): 1,900 lb
Step 2, Get the brochure maximum.
16,000 – 5,500 = 10,500 lb. That's the headline number for this build, the theoretical maximum with nobody and nothing aboard.
Step 3, Load the truck the way you actually will.
- 4 people (family trip): 700 lb
- Gear, cooler, firewood in the bed: 300 lb
- Weight-distribution hitch: 100 lb
Loaded truck weight = 5,500 + 700 + 300 + 100 = 6,600 lb.
Step 4, Recalculate what's left for the trailer.
16,000 – 6,600 = 9,400 lb of trailer you can pull today, 1,100 lb less than the brochure promised, just from a normal family load.
Step 5, Check the payload limit (this is the one that usually bites).
So far you've placed 700 + 300 + 100 = 1,100 lb on the truck, leaving 1,900 – 1,100 = 800 lb of payload. Now add the trailer's tongue weight. A 6,000-lb trailer at 12 percent puts ~720 lb on the hitch, that fits inside your remaining 800 lb, so you're clear. But a 9,000-lb trailer at 12 percent puts ~1,080 lb on the hitch, which exceeds your remaining payload. In that case your true limit isn't the 9,400-lb tow number at all, it's your payload, which caps you well below it.
The lesson from the worked example: your real towing capacity is the lowest of the limits, and for a loaded family truck the binding limit is very often payload, not the tow rating on the ad.
The 80% Rule: Why the Math Number Still Isn't the Towing Number
Even the honest number you just calculated is a maximum, not a target. A widely used safety guideline, the 80% rule, suggests keeping your loaded trailer at roughly 80 percent of your calculated maximum, to leave margin for braking, hills, crosswinds, mountain grades, and the long-term life of your transmission and brakes. It is a rule of thumb, not a legal figure, but it's the difference between towing at your limit and towing within it. Is towing capacity the same as GVWR?
No. GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) is the maximum the truck by itself can weigh when fully loaded, cargo and passengers included. Towing capacity comes from GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating), which covers the truck and the trailer together. They are different numbers with different jobs, and you have to respect both.
Can I trust the towing number on the door sticker?
The door-jamb label is the most trustworthy source you have, because it's specific to your VIN, but read it carefully. The Tire and Loading placard gives your payload, and some trucks add a separate Max Trailer Weight sticker. Your full GCWR and trailer rating usually live in the owner's manual towing supplement. When any brochure or website disagrees with your vehicle's own labels and manual, the vehicle wins.
Does adding a hitch change my towing capacity?
A hitch does not raise your vehicle's rating, the truck's GCWR is set by the manufacturer.
